How Much Does a Lip Flip Cost?
For any cosmetic treatment, a common first question is about cost. How much does a lip flip cost? Let’s look at what a lip flip is and what the costs involved are.
What is a Lip Flip?
A lip flip is a cosmetic procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of the upper lip. It involves the injection of a small amount of botulinum toxin, like Dysport® or Botox®, into the muscles surrounding the upper lip. This non-invasive treatment yields subtle yet notable results.
During the procedure, the carefully administered neurotoxin temporarily relaxes the upper lip muscles, causing a subtle “flipping” effect. Consequently, the upper lip appears fuller and more defined, without the need for volumizing fillers such as Juvederm® or Restylane®.
The primary purpose of a lip flip is to aesthetically improve the lips. By achieving a fuller and more pronounced upper lip, it can enhance facial symmetry and balance. Additionally, the treatment can address concerns such as reducing the visibility of a gummy smile by relaxing the upper lip muscles, resulting in a more harmonious smile.
One of the notable advantages of a lip flip is its non-invasive nature. Unlike lip fillers that involve the injection of volumizing substances, a lip flip solely employs botulinum toxin to modify the lip’s appearance. This aspect makes it an appealing option for individuals seeking more subtle enhancements.
So, How Much Does a Lip Flip Cost?
The cost of your lip flip will vary from clinic to clinic. Some offices will charge based on the number of units used, others will charge by the lip (upper vs lower vs both) while still others have a single charge for any lip flip. The cost of a lip flip will be significantly less than a lip filler, but will require more frequent touch up sessions, sometimes as often as every 6 weeks. At Imagen, a Dysport Lip Flip is typically between $50-100.
How does a lip flip work with Dysport or Botox?
During a lip flip treatment, a few units of Botox or Dysport are injected along the upper lip muscle, near the border. This relaxes the muscles that tend to tuck or pout the top lip making it appear thinner or wrinkly. By relaxing the upper lip, the “flip” effect makes more of the upper lip visible. This creates a fuller, plumper, but natural-appearing upper lip.
Lip Flip FAQs
What is the difference between a lip flip and lip filler?
A lip flip uses the botulinum toxin found in Dysport and Botox to relax to relax the muscles that tend to tuck or pout the top lip making it appear thinner. On the other hand, lip filler uses a dermal filler to shape and increase the volume of the lips. The choice between a lip flip, lip filler or getting both treatments done ultimately depends on your expectations and goals. Related article: Can I inject just a half syringe of filler?
Am I a good candidate?
Good candidates looking for subtle change to improve the appearance of a gummy smile, thin lips or to soften the marionette lines (smoker’s lines) around their mouth, a lip flip may be just what you need. However, if you’re looking for greater lip volume overall, a hyaluronic acid lip filler is going to be the better choice. Lip fillers also tend to have longer-lasting results than botulinum toxin like Botox or Dysport.
What can I expect with a Botox lip flip?
When it comes to lip enhancements, it’s important to understand that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, as everyone has a unique lip shape and desired outcome. The expertise of your Med Spa injector plays a significant role in the results you can expect. Choosing the right injectable for your lip enhancement goes beyond simply opting for the cheapest option; it’s about selecting what’s best suited for your individual needs.
In general, individuals seeking subtle lip enhancement, especially to improve a gummy smile, often opt for a lip flip procedure at a Med Spa. On the other hand, those looking for comprehensive lip augmentation usually choose a dermal filler treatment to achieve fuller lips.
The Pros and Cons of Treatment
Pro: Comfort
One of the top benefits of going the lip flip rout is comfort. Generally, Botox or Dysport injections are only subtly uncomfortable – with the right injector, you might not even feel the injections – while lip injections require numbing or nerve block. For those who desire poutier lips, but don’t want the discomfort of hyaluronic acid fillers, a Botox Lip Flip may be worth trying.
Pro: Downtime
No downtime is another benefit of the lip flip. Some may experience some mild redness and swelling at the injection site, which usually subsides within a few hours. However, lip fillers typically leave the patient with noticeable swelling that can last for a few days. Both bruising and swelling can be reduced with proper pre and post-filler treatment, however, if you’re taking blood thinners like ibuprofen, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can also leave lips temporarily bruised.
Pro: Post-Treatment Care
A third lip flip pro is maintenance. Following a Botox or Dysport injection, you can resume your usual daily activities with few post-op care instructions. Lip augmentation with lip fillers like Juvederm or Restylane require the patient to follow careful instructions to prevent filler movement.
Pro: Cost
Perhaps the biggest pro of the Botox Lip Flip is cost. Being roughly 1/10th of the cost of a syringe of filler, a few units of Botox can be really appealing for those wanting some lip enhancement but struggle affording hyaluronic acid fillers. We can’t stress enough that you get what you pay for, so a $60-80 lip flip may be more affordable, but the low cost comes with some cons.
Con: Results
Most men or women looking for lip enhancement are expecting volume, and a lip flip simply won’t get you there. Those who will experience the greatest results from a Botox or Dysport Lip Flip are those with a gummy smile or marionette lines around the mouth, which are commonly caused by aging or smoking. In both cases, our injector may still recommend a filler for additional volume.
Con: Longevity
Botulinum toxin injections for lips typically last up up to 3 months, whereas Juvederm or Restylane lip fillers can last up to a year. Both cosmetic procedures can work well together, however, if you’re looking for long-lasting volume, lip fillers are going to be the better option.
Con: Functionality
If you’ve ever had to get a filling at the dentist and noticed that silly loose lip side-effect after, this is a similar sensation to what some experience after a lip flip with Botox or Dysport. Because botulinum toxin works as a muscle relaxer – aka limits movement – you may find it awkward when you try to use a straw or squeeze your lips to eat from a fork or spoon. This side-effect of a Botox lip flip doesn’t always happen, but is worth noting.
Con: No Going Back
The final con we’ll address when it comes to choosing which lip treatment you’ll choose is the ability to “fix” or undo it if you don’t like the results. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers like Juvederm or Restylane come with a backup plan called Hyaluronidase, which works to dissolve the filler if the results aren’t quite right; botulinum toxin doesn’t have a backup. If you’re less than satisfied with the results of your Botox Lip Flip, there isn’t much you can do apart from waiting for the injection to wear off.
